With a population of 18,000, Los Alamos, meaning “The Cottonwoods,” is and area known for excellent school systems and low crime rates. Los Alamos is also known worldwide for their reputation for scientific and technological development.


Los Alamos History

Los Alamos Aerial ViewThe Los Alamos Ranch School was established in 1918 as a school that combined academics with outside experience. The school operated for 25 years. In 1945, the weapons research and design laboratory for Manhattan Project began in Los Alamos, and eventually evolved into the establishment of the Los Alamos National Laboratory. The Los Alamos National Laboratory soon grew to become one of the largest research institutions in the world.


Los Alamos Parks and Recreation

Los Alamos is home to many recreational parks, educational activities, and organizations. The Los Alamos County Recreation Department strives to provide a safe, fun, and educational environment for the community residents. In Los Alamos you will find Pajarito Ski Mountain, Larry Walkup Aquatic Center, a golf course, skating rink, and more. Los Alamos is also home to an urban trail system, which connects to many National Forest trails nearby.

Sports organizations are popular among the youth in Los Alamos. These activities include soccer, baseball, basketball, football, hockey, gymnastics, tennis, climbing, swimming, golf, martial arts, and more. Los Alamos is home to many sporting events, including Tour de Los Alamos, the Los Alamos mini-Marathon, and various golf tournaments.

Bradbury Science MuseumLos Alamos is home to many fun and educational attractions. Stop by the Bradbury Science Museum and learn about the history of the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Take in New Mexico’s beautiful sights at the Bandelier National Monument. Come see the ruins, watch the birds, or go on a hike. The Pajarito Mountain Ski Resort is located in the Jemez Mountains and is open to the public. Or, if golf is your game, check out Black Mesa Golf Club. Here in Los Alamos, you are sure to find many things to entertain you and your family during all four seasons!
