Sante Fe NMSanta Fe is the capital of New Mexico and is located in the Southern Rocky Mountains. Santa Fe is greatly multicultural, with a rich history and unique people. If you love the arts, culture, and music, then Santa Fe is the place for you. This vibrant city is New Mexico’s fourth largest city, behind Albuquerque, Las Cruces, and Rio Rancho. Santa Fe was the first city in the United States to be given the title of “Creative City” chosen the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Santa Fe’s ancient traditions, unique art, and culture attract over a million visitors per year.

If you love experiencing all four seasons, then Santa Fe is the place for you. Because of Santa Fe’s altitude, temperatures can change by 30 degrees on a single day. The hottest days in Santa Fe take place in June, with temperatures in the high 90s. Santa Fe also receives about 14 inches of rain and 17 inches of snow annually.


Santa Fe History

Sante Fe 1846Founded between 1607 and 1610, Santa Fe is the nation’s oldest state capital and second oldest city. Santa Fe was first settled by the conquistador Don Pedro de Peralta. Peralta and his men laid out the plan for Santa Fe at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains on the site of the ancient Pueblo Indian ruin of Kaupoge. New Mexico gained statehood in 1912. The Museum of New Mexico and the Museum of Fine Arts were both built by 1917. The Old Santa Fe Association was established in 1926, and they strive to maintain the ancient landmarks, historical structures, and traditions of the city.


Santa Fe Parks and Recreation

Sante Fe ParksSanta Fe offers many safe and fun recreational parks. Frenchy’s Field features playground equipment, picnic tables, grills, and a walking path. The area is landscaped with native wildflowers and is linked to the Santa Fe River. Herb Martinez Park offers a basketball court, tennis courts, a cement outdoor hockey rink, water fountain, baseball field, and picnic tables. Amelia White Park is a neighborhood park featuring spectacular mountain views and a Korean War Memorial. Santa Fe’s Salvador Perez Fitness Center is adjacent to Salvador Perez Park. The park features a little league field, soccer field, tennis courts, volleyball courts, and picnic facilities. The fitness center has an indoor pool, weight room, cardiovascular machines, and an aerobics room.

Sante Fe Events

Santa Fe offers many local events that are full of educational fun and excitement for the whole family! Come view some of Santa Fe’s finest art, enjoy the bounty of the Harvest Festival, or watch some of the Santa Fe Film Festival. You and your friends and family will enjoy spending time exploring all that Santa Fe has to offer.

Burning of Zozobra and Santa Fe Fiesta
This event takes place in early September. Festivities are held all week long commemorating the reoccupation of Santa Fe in 1692. The festival kicks off with the dramatic Burning of Zozobra, a 49 foot tall marionette. His ending marks the beginning of Fiesta. Many activities take place, including music, dancing, food, and the Children’s Pet Parade. The Fiesta is exciting for residents and visitors alike, so be sure not to miss it!

Pojoaque River Art Tour
Pojoaque River Art Tour takes place in the Pojoaque River Valley, which is an old farming community north of Santa Fe. Nearly 20 artists open their studios, exhibiting paintings, pottery, weavings, glass and more.

Santa Fe EventsSanta Fe Wine & Chile Fiesta
The Santa Fe Wine and Chile Fiesta takes place in late September and features more than 110 wineries. Almost 50 Santa Fe chefs participating in seminars, cooking demonstrations, guest chef luncheons, winemaker dinners, and the famous Grand Food & Wine Tasting and the Gruet Golf Classic.

Harvest Festival
The Harvest Festival takes place in October at El Rancho de las Golondrinas, a living history museum dedicated to the heritage and culture of Spanish Colonial New Mexico. Here you can learn to string chile ristras, crush wine grapes by foot and grind sorghum with the help of burros. The Harvest Festival is perfect for the family and an enriching experience.

Santa Fe Film Festival
The Santa Fe Film Festival takes place over five days in December. The festival showcases more than 200 films, from those made in the Southwest to independent American-made narrative films, foreign films, documentaries, and art films celebrating the creative spirit. There is a full schedule of workshops, panels, parties, awards and more held all around the city. The Santa Fe Film Festival has become an exciting film event that appeals to professionals and fans alike.

Santa Fe Palace of the GovernorsPalace of the Governors
The Palace of the Governors is located Santa Fe Plaza. It was built by the Spanish as a government building in 1610, but the Palace remains today as the country's oldest continuously occupied public building. Its exhibits tell the history of Santa Fe as well as the surrounding regions of New Mexico.

New Mexico Museum of Art
The New Mexico Museum of Art displays a permanent collection of Southwestern artists, including major pieces by Georgia O'Keeffe. New exhibitions are always being mounted that cover the works of contemporary artists of all kinds.

Santa Fe at the PlazaGeorgia O’Keeffe Museum
The Georgia O’Keeffe Museum covers over 13,000 square-feet and is located conveniently near the Plaza in downtown Santa Fe.

Santa Fe Children’s Museum
The Santa Fe Children’s Museum offers interactive exhibits, many educational and fun programs and an outdoor garden. Come spend a day here with the family and have tons of fun!
